Cuesta Takes Second and Third at WSC Championship Meet

The Cuesta College Swimming and Diving teams competed at the Western State Conference Championship meet this past weekend at the Bakersfield College aquatic Center.

The men’s team placed second with 701 points. Ventura accumulated 779 points to win the title. For the women, the Cougars placed third with 518 points. They trailed Ventura (747) and Santa Monica (529).

For the males, Zac Taapken was the top performer in terms of points. Taapken won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 58.26 seconds. He was also the runner-up in both the 200 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke, with times of 1:55.13 and 2:07.38, respectively.

Cuesta also got a big performance from Matt Giancanelli, who won the 200 freestyle in 1:42.76. He also got second in the 100 freestyle by posting a 46.77.

Former Atascadero High School swimmer Patrick Neal was a finalist in three event for Cuesta. He took second in the 100 backstroke with a 53.34, and got third in the 200 back with a 1:59.98. His time of 1:59.82 in the 200 individual medley earned him seventh place.

San Luis Obispo High School graduates Dragan Dincic and Dominic Magliari also represented the Cougars. Dincic was a finalist in the 50 (21.52) and 100 (47.32) freestyle, as well as the 100 backstroke (54.06). Magliari was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly with a time of 52.22. He also got third in the 200 butterfly (1:57.19) and ninth in the 200 individual medley (2:03.05).

Dincic and Giancanelli teamed with Jackson Petty and Luke Walton to place second in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:24.99. Cuesta also placed second in the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 800 freestyle relay. In the 400 freestyle relay, Giancanelli, Dincic, Petty, and Walton posted a time of 3:05.84 to win the event.

For the women, Ally Bernard recorded the most points. She won the 50 freestyle with a 25.65. She also placed fourth in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 50 butterfly.

Shelby Romuk and Erin Hasenkamp were both finalists in all three of their individual events. Romuk placed third in the 200 individual medley and the 100 butterfly, with times of 2:17.60 and 1:01.04, respectively. She placed seventh in the 50 butterfly. Hasenkamp took fourth in the 200 freestyle with a 2:00.90, and fourth in the 50 backstroke with a 28.95. She also finished fifth in the 100 backstroke by swimming a time of 1:02.96.

Kristen Brimage won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

The Cougar women took second in the 200 freestyle relay and the 200 and 400 medley relays. They placed third in the 800 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay.

Cuesta will finish off the season at the State Championship meet at the East Los Angeles College swimming pool.
