Story Headlines

  • The Cal Poly Swimming and Diving team had their annual Green and Gold meet this past Saturday
  • The Gold team edged out the Green team by winning the final event
  • Senior Lacey Buck won three individual events

Members of the Green team and Gold team square off in the men's 200-yard backstroke at the 2011 Green and Gold Meet.

The Cal Poly Swimming and Diving team hosted the annual Green and Gold meet at the Anderson Aquatic Center this past Saturday, a competition that pitted Mustang against Mustang.

The swimming and diving team was split into two teams for the meet, one called the Green team, the other called the Gold team. On Saturday, the Gold team prevailed by a score of 137-124.

“This meet was really all about having fun,” Cal Poly head coach Tom Milich said. “The times were very good for this early in the season.”

The meet was close throughout, but going into the final 200-yard freestyle relay, the Green team needed to win both the men’s and women’s events just to finish with a tie. The Gold team of Andrea Viogt, Rachel Cleak, Jill Jones, and Katrina Anderson clinched the victory by winning the women’s 200 freestyle relay.

One of the top performers for the Gold team was senior distance swimmer Lacey Buck. Buck started her day off with a win in the women’s 200 freestyle, with a time of 1 minute, 54.36 seconds. She went on to win two other events, the women’s 200 butterfly (2:04.63) and women’s 500 freestyle (5:03.83).

Another major contributor to the Gold team’s victory was sophomore Konrad Antoniuk. Antoniuk won the men’s  200 butterfly by nearly three seconds with a time of 1:57.06. He was also the victor in the men’s 500 freestyle, posting a time of 4:38.15. In addition, he swam the backstroke leg in the men’s 200 medley relay.

For the green team, freshman Jimmy Deiparine was one of the top performers. He won the men’s 100 and 200 breaststrokes with times of 58.57 and 2:11.04, respectively. He was also a member of the winning mens’ 200 freestyle relay.

“I was pretty happy. I was pretty close to my personal best times, and that is difficult for me to do early in the season, during training,” Deiparine said.

Another big swim came from sophomore Adrian Brynnel of the Green team. Brynnel won the men’s 200 freestyle by more than two seconds with a very quick time of 1:40.90.

“I had a great 200, which will serve as a good stepping stone for the season,” Brynnel said. “It’s nice to see the work paying off already.”

After battling with each other day, the Cal Poly swim team came back together to warm down.

Overall, the times at the meet were fairly quick for such an early season competition, Milich said.

“Our women’s 200 back and 200 fly were very good, and those were some of our stronger events at conference last year” Milich said. “I also thought the men’s 500 freestyle was good.”

In addition to the swimming events, the meet also featured a diving event. Sophomore Samantha McIntyre of the Green team won the women’s combined one-meter and three-meter diving, while Adams Elliot of the Gold team won the men’s.
